Benefits and Features
The biggest benefit of the Sleep Number mattress is the dual air chamber system that lets individual sleepers set the inflation and firmness levels for their own side of the bed. So, if mom likes the bed soft and dad likes it firm, a compromise can be reached.
Users operate a remote that controls an air pump on the bed, which then sucks air into or out of the mattress's air chamber.
Other features include a 30-night trial period, 20-year limited warranty (but, it doesn't include many parts), digital controls and high-quality fabric materials.
Drawbacks and Complaints
The biggest drawback to the Select Comfort Bed is the “trench” effect created when both sides are inflated to a moderate to full firmness setting. Once the dual air chambers are inflated, a dip is created in the middle of the bed.
Many sleepers find themselves rolling into this dip or fighting against it. So, if your partner and you both prefer a firmer bed, you may be better off simply searching for a quality, traditional mattress that you both like.
The other major complaint from a number of Select Comfort bed consumers is the formation of mold inside the mattress. Because the Sleep Number bed sucks air inside the mattress, it also sucks in atmospheric moisture and mold spores.
A class action lawsuit is currently being filed against the company due to a number of consumers finding mold inside their mattresses. This mold has led to lung and allergy problems that has adversely affected the health of the complainants.

There are six models of Sleep Number mattresses and they range from the Sleep Number 3000 basic model to the deluxe, luxury Sleep Number 9000.
The Sleep Number 9000 can retail for as much as $4700 with full accessories and features, while the Sleep Number 3000 can cost as little as $449.99 for a twin-sized basic model.
