To learn how you can build your own platform bed frame for a double mattress for less than $40, keep reading for easy-to-follow instructions. Tools and Materials Needed to Build a Platform Bed To build your own platform bed frame at home, you’ll need the following tools:
Your first step when building your own platform bed frame is to cut your lumber and MDF particle board down to size. A standard double mattress is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, or 4.5 feet wide by 6.25 feet long. That means you’ll need to cut your MDF particle board down to a 4.5 feet by 6.25 feet dimension. You’ll also want your 2x4’s cut down to the following sizes:
Step Two – Building the Bed Frame Your next step is to actually construct the platform bed frame or box. Start by making a basic box with your 2x4’s. Two shorter pieces will make the inside ends at the top and bottom of the bed while your two longer pieces will make the outside frame. Pre-drill holes in the end of your lumber and then screw the four sides together to make your box. Finally, use your remaining 2 short pieces to make evenly spaced support brackets in the middle of the bed. Again, pre-drill holes and use wood screws to connect them to your frame. Step Three – Attaching Your MDF Platform Now that you have your basic platform bed frame, you’re ready to attach the actual platform. Start by pre-drilling holes through the sheet of MDF particle board and into the wood frame. Finally, use your wood screws to attach the MDF board to the frame. There, you’ve now built a basic platform bed frame for less than $40. Final Steps and Finishing Touches If you’d like to add some finishing touches to your platform bed frame, try priming it or staining the wood to give it a professional finish. If you really want to get creative, you can add castors to make your new platform bed mobile while also adding height. See also: All Site Articles for Mattress & Bed Tips
