Mattress & Bed Tips :: Natural Latex Mattress Natural Latex Mattress: Benefits and Drawbacks of a Natural or Organic Latex MattressA natural latex mattress is made from a solid piece of latex rubber covered in fabric. Some customers love their comfort and toxic-free construction, while others complain they’re too hot or “squishy.” To learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of latex mattresses, keep reading to decide for yourself. Benefits of a Natural Latex Mattress Comfort Because a natural latex mattress is made from one solid piece of latex, it has no pressure points. These pressure points, commonly found in innerspring mattresses can be painful or uncomfortable for some sleepers. Customizable Again, because latex is typically cut from a solid piece and then covered with fabric, it’s much easier to make a customized natural latex mattress than an innerspring counterpart. As a result, custom-made latex mattresses tend to cost the same as customized innerspring models. The customized and specially built models are popular with boat owners, RV drivers and antique collectors who need a custom mattress for their awkwardly shaped sleeping surfaces. Organic Natural latex materials do not emit gasses or toxic elements like glue, which is a common ingredient in innerspring or traditional models. They are, essentially, a non-toxic sleeping surface made from naturally occurring and sustainable rubber latex. Solid Material Construction Natural latex mattresses are typically built using one piece of natural latex that’s then covered with fabric. This solid construction means the bed is less prone to failure – basically, there are no springs to come loose, stitches to break or inner materials to fray. Drawbacks of Natural Latex Mattresses Less Resistant to Allergens A natural latex mattress, or any mattress made totally from all-natural materials, is going to be less resistant to allergens than chemically-treated materials designed to withstand moisture and dust. Speaking of allergies, it’s important to note that some people (about 6 percent of North Americans) are allergic to natural latex. However, there are synthetic latex mattresses available for sale if you have an allergy, but are still set on a bed. Sleeps Hot A natural latex mattress will typically sleep cooler than a memory foam mattress, but there is still a certain amount of residual heat that builds up in the latex foam as you sleep. Most sleepers find that a cotton mattress pad helps to circulate the air and alleviate the problem of over-heating. High Price While natural latex mattresses cost about the same or less than higher-end innerspring mattresses, the price point is still quite high for many consumers. They typically range in price from about $900 to $4000 for a higher-end model. Too Squishy If you like a firm night’s sleep, then a natural latex mattress may not be for you. Latex is available in firmer models, but there always tends to be an enveloping or “cushy” feeling when sleeping on these mattresses. See also: All Site Articles for Mattress & Bed Tips
