Mattress & Bed Tips :: Memory Foam Topper Memory Foam Topper: What to Consider When Buying a Memory Foam TopperMemory foam topper pads are supposed to work much like memory foam mattresses, in that they should reduce pressure and make for a more comfortable night's sleep by shaping themselves to your body's curves. But is a memory foam topper really as useful as a mattress? The simple answer to that question is no. But there are a number of things to take into consideration before you totally count a memory foam topper out. Your Current Mattress Even the best memory foam topper isn't going to be much help to you if your current mattress is in poor condition. If you have an old mattress that has sags, damaged springs or coils or if you have an old mattress that actually needs to be replaced, then a memory foam topper is probably not going to be much help. You may also have a mattress that all ready has a topper, like the pillow tops that have become so popular on newer models. If you put a memory foam topper on top of an all ready existing topper it will not work right. It can't solve structural problems. It's really only if you have a mattress that is too firm, but in good condition, that a memory foam topper will be worth purchasing. Toppers vs. Mattresses If you are looking into purchasing a memory foam topper to improve an old, saggy mattress, you should just go whole hog and buy a memory foam mattress. There is a bit of a price jump, but a topper doesn't replace a mattress so you'd be wasting your with that purchase anyway. Regardless of whether you buy a memory foam topper or mattress, you are going to want to look for quality. Just because you see your hand print in the foam doesn't necessarily mean it's the best foam for your bucks, so ask as many questions as possible about the qualities of the foam. Thickness & Denseness When it comes to a memory foam topper, the thicker it is, the better it is. It's the same deal when it comes to a memory foam mattress. Because you sink into the memory foam, you want it to be thick and dense so it can take the weight of your body. If your topper is too thin, you won't get much relief from it, and it won't be doing the job of making your too-firm mattress more comfortable. Other Things to Consider One of the biggest complaints about memory foam is how much heat it retains. Because it is a dense foam, and because it molds completely to your body's form, it hangs on to your body heat and can be uncomfortable for people who aren't used to it. Give it some time, though. Most people get used to the heat. The other thing people complain about is the scent that a low quality memory foam topper can have. Cheap foam has a strong, chemical scent that can linger for a long time and be a little irritating. So make sure you do your homework before buying something you have to curl up on every night.
