Magnetic Mattress Pad: Information about Mattress Pads that are Magnetic

A magnetic mattress pad is typically a 2-4 inch thick pad that’s interwoven with anywhere from 50 to 200 magnets. The magnet strips are encased in the pad between layers of padding and foam so that you don’t actually feel the magnets.

Typically, the magnets used in a mattress pad are between a 250 and 9,000 gauss rating (this is the rating used to describe a magnet’s force). The higher the rating, the higher the magnet’s power.

What are the benefits of magnetic mattress pads?

Proponents of magnetic therapy claim that it increases blood flow by interacting with iron in the blood and relaxing the muscles as a result. That increased blood flow also, apparently, brings more nutrients and oxygen to the body.

While magnets can’t harm you, there is no solid proof that they actually work, cure insomnia or fix problems like chronic pain.

Do they actually work?

A magnetic mattress pad company recently came under fire from the California Attorney General sued them for making false medical claims. European Health Concepts was charged with engaging in unfair business practices, targeting seniors and claiming the product had a therapeutic effect, a claim unsubstantiated by the FDA.

However, proponents of magnetic therapy says it does work and can work wonders realigning the body’s energy and providing relief for joint pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, bone density problems and even arthritis.

The FDA does allow manufacturers of magnetic mattress pads to make claims that the product can provide general pain relief, but they’re not allowed to say that it reduces joint or muscle pain specifically, improves the circulation, or promotes general relaxation.

How much do magnetic mattress pads cost?

A queen-sized magnetic mattress pad can cost anywhere from $200 to $1800 or even higher, depending on the manufacturer and the gauss rating of the magnets inside.

Should I always sleep on a magnetic pad?

Because the human body can quickly adapt to magnetic energy, it’s typically not recommended that you sleep on a magnetic pad every night. Most medical professionals that support magnetic pads suggest that you take frequent breaks or sleep with the pad on alternating days or weeks.

Another consideration is that some users complain sleeping on a magnetic pad can cause tossing and turning. This is an unsubstantiated claim and should be determined on an individual basis.

Where can I buy a magnetic mattress pad?

Before you buy a magnetic mattress pad, you should discuss it first with your doctor or chiropractor. If they recommend it, ask them for referrals to specific brands.

There are numerous companies selling these products and there is a huge range in quality, durability and actually effectiveness.

If you’re planning to buy a magnetic mattress pad, try companies like Magnetic Therapy, GoodNight, BIOFlex, and Serenity. Remember though, consult a health professional before you make the purchase.
