Heated Mattress Pad: Saving Money With a Heated Pad for Your Mattress

A heated mattress pad is a simple solution to a cold bed and high heating bills. The best part is they’ve come a long way since the old Sears Electro-lux blankets you used to see at your Grandma’s house.

To learn more about heated mattress pads, new designs and how they can save you money on your heating bills, keep reading.

Heated Mattress Pad Overview

Heated mattress pads come in a variety of fabrics and style, but are typically found in cotton, polyester or a blend of the two. Some more luxurious options offer quilted tops or cashmere finishes for that added touch of luxury.

You can also find waterproof heated mattress pads to use in a water bed or if you’re particularly prone to night sweats.

Heated Mattress Controls

Most quality heated mattress pads will come with an adjustable thermometer control that allows you to set the heat to a level that you’re comfortable with. Whether it’s a dial or a digital interface, you should be able to set the heat level yourself.

You also want to look for a heated mattress pad that comes with a timer or an auto-off function. You’ll pay a bit more for these features, but they’re safer and will save you money. Most users like to turn their pads a few minutes before bed and set a timer to shut them off after they’ve fallen asleep.

The Safety of Heated Bed Pads

All heated bed pads are subject to US laws and controls that require them to operate at a low voltage level, meaning they won’t or can’t become a fire hazard.

That said, heated bed pads should not be left on for days and you shouldn’t use heated bedding that looks like it’s decades old or may have faulty wiring. If the cords are at all damaged or exposed or the pad has a tendency to overheat, you should dispose of it.

New Technology in Heated Pads

One of the newest developments is the introduction of heating zones. Basically, separate heating zones allow you to control where you want to focus the heat on a mattress.

For example, let’s say you like the bed hot and your spouse is always cooking. With a heating-zone-equipped queen or king-sized heated mattress pad, you can set your side to hot and leave your spouse’s side turned off.

Saving Money with a Heat Pad

Because heated bed pads are so low voltage, they don’t use a lot of electricity. So, in comparison to turning your heat up at night or running a heated mattress pad, the pad will always cost significantly less. So, you can now turn your heat down at night without giving up a warm and toasty bed.
