Discount Mattresses: Finding Mattresses at Discount Prices

Finding discount mattresses isn't just about flipping through the pages of your local store flyers. The committed bargain hunter needs to hit the pavement and the keyboard to find the best deals on wholesale mattresses or other bargains. For tips and tricks on where you can find high-quality mattresses at discount prices, keep reading.

Get to North Carolina

While it may not be worth it if you live in South California, a trip to North Carolina could save you hundreds, if not thousands on a mattress. Major mattress manufacturers like Sealy, Serta, Kenmore and Foster all have major factories and office locations in North Carolina – meaning you can find mattresses at real factory-direct prices.

The North Carolina furniture corridor is also home to a number of smaller mattress manufacturers whose names may not be as recognizable as the big brands, but they still make high-quality mattresses. Don't pass them by.

Always Ask for a Deal

Typically, mattresses have a huge markup and salespeople make big-time commissions. So, there's always room to wiggle. You should never be afraid to haggle over the price of a mattress, ask for free add-ons like bed wheels or mattress covers or walk away from a price that you don't feel is fair. Remember, we never said the road to true discount mattresses would be easy.

Ignore the Model Names

Did you know that a number of major mattress manufacturers will actually change the model name of their mattresses from retail location to retail location. The reasoning behind this is to dissuade price comparison. So, instead of searching for a particular brand or model, just look for a mattress that's actually comfortable for you.

Buy Refurbished or Returned Mattresses

Most department stores and mattress retail locations will sell mattresses at heavily discounted prices if they've been returned within the 30-day trial period. While you should always test these products out, major discount mattresses prices can be found simply by asking the salesperson if they have any “returns” for sale.

Go at the End of the Month

Like cars, prices on mattresses tend to drop closer to the end of the month as stores and salespeople attempt to make their monthly quota. You'll also find that a deeper discount can be had by shopping on a dark and dreary weekday instead of a sunny Saturday. With an empty mattress or furniture store, you're more likely to score a great deal from a lonely salesperson.

Go to a Discount Store

Sometimes, the best places to find discount mattresses are discount stores. Try your local Wal-Mart, Target, Zellers or other discount retailer to find great deals on reasonably priced, standard mattresses. You may not score a big brand name, but as long as you choose a mattress that's comfortable for you, it's worth whatever you pay.
