Craftmatic Beds: Lawsuits and Charges against Craftmatic Mattresses and Beds

Craftmatic Beds has recently changed its company name to Contour, but that hasn’t stopped the company from continuing to get into hot water over its predatory and aggressive sales tactics.

To learn more about Craftmatic’s seedy history and bad reputation, keep reading.

Nov 2007 – Craftmatic Settles Do Not Call List Charges

In November, 2007, Craftmatic settled with the FTC after making calls to customers whose phone numbers were on the Do Not Call list.

Craftmatic Beds hosted a sweepstake and used the entries to obtain customer phone numbers for sales calls. Entrants were not informed they would be getting sales calls later. As a result, Craftmatic wound up having to pay $4.4 million in fines.

Aug 2007 – Craftmatic Beds Settles With Florida Over Sales Tactics Charges

After a long case in Florida, Craftmatic agreed to a settlement with the Florida Attorney General over charges that the company uses aggressive and deceptive sales tactics that target the elderly.

After Florida residents complained about aggressive and prolonged sales pitches that never seemed to end (in one instance, a resident had to call the police before the sales rep would leave), the company was ordered to pay $100,000 in fines.

Jan 2004 – Ohio Sues Craftmatic Beds

In 2004, the Ohio Attorney General sued Craftmatic for alleged false advertising and high-pressure sales tactics.

Petro filed a five-count complaint against Craftmatic Organization and J. KAZ Inc., doing business as Craftmatic of Pittsburgh.

The complaint asserted that Craftmatic targeted Ohio's vulnerable populations, the elderly and the mentally incompetent. It alleged violations of the Consumer Sales Practices Act for high-pressure sales tactics, illegal pricing and false advertising.

The company settled with the state for $42,500 and agreed to reimburse customers close to $200,000 based on disputed sales.

Feb 1992 – Craftmatic Ordered to Stop Deceptive Ads

A Massachusetts judge ordered Craftmatic Contour Organization to stop airing ads that made deceptive claims about their adjustable chairs.

Apparently, the chairs were being sold to the elderly and disabled, but were not designed for that purpose. According to the charges, Craftmatic salespeople were telling potential customers that the chairs had medical or therapeutic benefits.

May 1991 – Craftmatic Signs Consent Decree With the FTC

In May 1991, Craftmatic Beds signed a consent degree with the FTC saying they would cease misrepresenting the medical benefits of both their mattresses and at-home water-quality testing kits.

As a result of signing the consent decree, the investigation into the efficacy of these products or the validity of Craftmatic’s claims ceased.

Oct 1989 – Connecticut Sues Craftmatic Over their Contour Chair

The state of Connecticut sued the Craftmatic company after their sales representatives made claims that the company’s Contour Chair was custom-fitted for customers.

The company was also charged with deceiving customers with fake discounts. Apparently, customers would be offered discounts when there was actually no set retail price for the chair.

The chairs sold for anywhere from $2800 to $4000. In the end, Craftmatic Beds was forced to repay close to $180,000 in chair sales.
