Mattress & Bed Tips :: Craftmatic Adjustable Bed Craftmatic Adjustable Bed: Craftmatic and Contour Adjustable Bed Company in Trouble AgainThe Craftmatic Adjustable Bed company is in trouble again. The company is now called Contour Adjustable Beds after changing their name from Craftmatic. They were recently told by several states, including Florida and Washington, to tone down their sales tactics and stop making claims about therapeutic effects. Unfortunately, the company has come under fire again in the state of Washington for refusing to abide by these orders. History of Complaints Against Craftmatic In Washington state alone, the Washington State Attorney General (Doug Walsh) has received over 30 complaints about the Craftmatic adjustable bed in just three years of service. All the complaints have revolved around aggressive sales techniques and an unclear or fraudulent return policy. The most recent complaint came from a Martin Gustavason, a man who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and skin cancer. He was told the bed would help improve his circulation and aid him in getting a good night’s sleep. After just one night on the bed, Gustavason called the company to return it as it was too painful to sleep on. Gustavason was told that he could not return his Craftmatic adjustable bed because the return policy expired three days before he ever got the bed. He has now entered a lawsuit with the company and the Washington State Attorney General’s office is considering pressing charges again. The Craftmatic adjustable bed has received numerous complaints across the country, including in Florida where the company was subject to a fine that required them to pay over $100,000 in reparations to customers. Federal Trade Commission Investigations Contour Adjustable Beds, the new company name for Craftmatic, is currently under investigation from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for what has been described as predatory sales tactics that target the elderly, ill and other vulnerable customers. The company was also recently fined $4.4 million by the Federal Trade Commission for failure to comply with the national Do Not Call list. The company was calling contest respondents repeatedly even after their names and numbers appeared on the Do Not Call list. This latest investigation is in the preliminary stages and could put Contour Adjustable Beds in the hot seat. If a full investigation is undertaken and the company is charged, they could face massive fines and reparations charges of close to $20 million, enough to put them completely out of business. Craftmatic Caught Selling Names and Numbers Contour Adjustable Beds also recently came under fire for renting its customer list out to other retailers and marketing the list in a memo as one that contained the names and numbers of responsive buyers who “would buy anything to relieve their pain or illnesses.” Other retailers complained the remark was predatory and unnecessary. The list contained all the available contact info for buyers of the Craftmatic adjustable bed. See also: All Site Articles for Mattress & Bed Tips
