Cheap Mattress: How to Test and Buy a Cheap, But Good Mattress

“Cheap mattress” doesn’t have to mean a poor-quality mattress. In fact, a number of the extra features and add-ons that only seem to add on to the price of a mattress don’t actually do much in terms of reducing back pain or helping you get a good night’s sleep.

If you arm yourself with some basic mattress information and standard knowledge on how to choose a great mattress, you can turn that supposedly inexpensive mattress into one of the best purchases you’ve ever made.
Before you start your shopping, here’s what you need to know:

Not all Mattresses are Built the Same: Innerspring vs. Foam

There are typically two types of mattresses – innerspring and all-foam mattresses. Innerspring mattresses are the most common and often the most affordable. They’re made from layers of foam interspersed with coils. Foam mattresses are popular, but tend to be a little more expensive.

If you’re looking for a deal, your best bet is with innerspring mattresses. The coil count shouldn’t be your primary decision factor, but it’s a good place to start. Ideally, you want to see between 400 and 600 coils in a queen-size mattress.

The strength of each coil, also known as its gauge, will then affect how soft or firm a mattress is. Heavier coils tend to be stiffer and firmer while lighter coils will give you a softer feel.

And though it’s not impossible to find a cheap mattress made from foam, it can be done. The two types are visco-elastic (memory foam) and latex (a natural rubber).

How to Buy a Cheap Mattress

You can go dizzy reading about coils and density, but the most crucial part of choosing a mattress is actually testing it. What feels amazing to one person may be a nightmare for another and vice versa, so you have to test.
First, when you go shopping for a cheap mattress, wear comfortable clothing and slip off shoes.

Next, try looking just at stores that you trust. Mattress comparison-shopping is very hard because most manufacturers will list and label the exact same models differently from store to store. So, your best bet is to buy from a retailer that you know and trust.

Finally, look for a retailer that offers a no-questions-asked sleep test guarantee for anywhere from a week to a month. You want to be able to take the mattress home, try it out and return it if it doesn’t work out.

Now, it’s time to test it.

How to Test a Cheap Mattress

To test a cheap bed, you want to lie down in it in your normal sleeping position for at least five minutes. If you like it, try repeating that on both your stomach and your back. Ask yourself if you can feel support in your lower back? Are your hips, joints and shoulders comfortable?

Finally, to test the quality of a cheap mattress, press down on it and see if the mattress bounces back right away. A good innerspring mattress should bounce back instantly.
